Website Design Costs in NZ: Build Fees, Hosting and Ongoing Support

Separate your website build fee from hosting, renewals, maintenance, and support so you can budget beyond launch day.

Website design costs in NZ have two parts: the work needed to build the site and the services needed to keep it running. A clear budget separates them, so a reasonable launch price does not become a surprise set of bills later.

For a small service business, the right scope might be a straightforward website with clear service information and a reliable enquiry form. An online shop or customer portal needs a different budget because payments, accounts, and integrations add work.

Published examples of NZ website build fees

New Zealand provider HornTech lists these project ranges in its 2026 website cost guide. Figures are in NZD. Check whether GST applies to any individual quote; the table is a provider reference, not a national average.

Published project example

Build fee in NZD

Landing page or single-page site

NZ$1,500–NZ$3,000

Small business website with 5–10 pages

NZ$3,000–NZ$8,000

Shopify e-commerce site

NZ$5,000–NZ$15,000

HornTech states that these examples include design, development, basic SEO setup, and one revision round, while ongoing hosting, maintenance, and marketing are separate. Built By Div quotes projects individually and does not offer these figures as its own packages.

What belongs in the initial build

Ask the proposal to name the pages, design approach, content responsibilities, functionality, and launch work. These are the deliverables that make the initial fee understandable.

For a service business, explain how an enquiry should move through the site. If a visitor requests a quote, who receives it? Does a copy need to go into a spreadsheet or CRM? Will an acknowledgement be sent? Answering these questions early helps avoid an unfinished process behind a polished form.

An existing website needs an inventory before replacement. Identify important articles, project pages, downloads, and customer links. Agree on what will move and how replaced URLs will be handled. Migration should be a named task rather than an assumption.

Hosting is different from maintenance

Hosting provides the environment in which a website runs. Maintenance covers agreed work such as software updates, checks, backups, and fixes. A provider may bundle them, but they are not interchangeable.

A hosted website builder includes some platform responsibilities in its subscription. A self-hosted site places more responsibility on the account holder and their technical provider. Neither arrangement removes the need to manage content, enquiries, access, and subscriptions.

Ask what the hosting plan actually includes. Check renewal pricing, storage allowances, backups, restoration help, and support channels. If customer response depends on the website, ask who investigates a failed form or an outage and when they are available.

Budget for renewals and small changes

Make a list of every account attached to the site. Depending on the setup, that could include the domain, hosting, business email, a booking platform, paid plugins, form tools, or automation services.

Record the owner, billing currency, renewal date, and purpose of each account. If a subscription is charged in a foreign currency, allow for exchange-rate changes and any payment-provider fees. Confirm the applicable taxes with the supplier rather than assuming every quote uses the same basis.

Small content changes also need a plan. Replacing a staff photo, adding a service, and designing a new landing page may be billed differently. Ask whether your support plan includes editing time, whether unused time expires, and how work outside the plan is approved.

Calculate the first year and the years after it

For a hypothetical NZ budget, assume a NZ$4,500 build, NZ$50 annual domain renewal, NZ$35 monthly hosting, and NZ$120 monthly maintenance. The first-year total would be NZ$6,410 before any applicable taxes and additional services.

That is NZ$4,500 + NZ$50 + NZ$420 + NZ$1,440. These are illustrative inputs, not current provider prices. They assume hosting is charged separately from maintenance and exclude email, software licences, marketing, and payment processing.

With the same recurring assumptions, year two would be NZ$1,910 before extra work. That difference is why a first-year total and an annual running-cost estimate are both useful. Check for renewal increases rather than assuming introductory prices continue.

Choose support around your actual business needs

A brochure site that changes twice a year needs a different arrangement from a site taking daily bookings or paid orders. Describe what a failure would interrupt, then choose appropriate monitoring, backup, and support responsibilities.

Ask for a distinction between response time and resolution time. Receiving a reply does not necessarily mean a problem is fixed. Confirm what constitutes urgent work and whether support is available during the New Zealand business hours that matter to you.

You may prefer to manage routine edits yourself. If so, include a handover session or instructions in the project scope. Make sure someone in your business can access the key accounts even when the original developer is unavailable.

Frequently asked questions

Is hosting included in website design costs?

Sometimes. A proposal might include an initial hosting period, an ongoing monthly plan, or no hosting at all. Check the start date, renewal amount, and included services before comparing quotes.

Do I need a maintenance plan for a simple site?

You need someone responsible for its upkeep. The work varies by platform and features. If you handle maintenance yourself, confirm which tasks the platform covers and which remain yours.

What if I change developers later?

Ask about account access, content export, licences, and migration before the build starts. Some elements are portable; others depend on the original platform or subscription. Get the transfer process and any fees in writing.
